Etosha Information:
Etosha National Park, a nature conservation area, measuring 22275km², is one of the most significant game reserves in Africa. In the eastern part of the park a large salt pan covers approximately 5000km² which was formed about two million years ago when the Kunene Delta dried up and its riverbed shifted. More than 100 mammal species and 340 different species of birds are found in the park.
The name Etosha is derived from the Oshivambo language meaning “big, white place”. After the Second World War Etosha became a favored tourist destination and it was necessary to supply accommodation within the park. In 1950 Okaukuejo, which is the main camp, opened its gates. Today there is a restaurant, post office, fuel station, souvenir shop, two swimming pools and an information center for tourists. The park has 4 more restcamps, Halali is situated in the middle between Okaukuejo and Namutoni on the eastern side. Onkoshi lies in the far north and Dolomite Camp in the east. An additional camp, Olifantsrus, which lies between Dolomite and Okaukuejo was built more recently and is purely equiped for camping.
